Functional near-infrared spectroscopy for the assessment of speech related tasks.

Brain Lang. 2011 Apr 18;

Authors: Dieler AC, Tupak SV, Fallgatter AJ

Over the past years functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has substantially contributed to the understanding of language and its neural correlates. In contrast to other imaging techniques, fNIRS is well suited to study language function in healthy and psychiatric populations due to its cheap and easy application in a quiet and natural measurement setting. Its relative insensitivity for motion artifacts allows the use of overt speech tasks and the investigation of verbal conversation. The present review focuses on the numerous contributions of fNIRS to the field of language, its development, and related psychiatric disorders but also on its limitations and chances for the future.

[Postoperative behavior syndrome in dental practice in children].

Anesteziol Reanimatol. 2011 Jan-Feb;(1):18-22

Authors:

The literature contains numerous publications on the issue of Postoperative Behavior. The purpose of this study was to obtain installment of the objective data on the occurrence of Postoperative Behavior in dental profile patients depending on various factors. Age of the children who underwent the study ranged from 3 to 5 years. The study group included 531 patients, while the control group contained 103 children who were treated independently. During the hospital admission patient’s parents were asked to fill in the appropriate grading systems, such as MAS, DAS, STAI, mYPAS and PHBQ, the general information table was filled in as well, which, in addition to general demographic characteristics, considered factors such as: age, number of unsuccessful attempts to sanate the oral cavity, the number of caries, etc. The most important factors that are strongly correlated with the development of PHBQ, were statistically considered as r < 0.1 and p > 0.005. Number of the unsuccessful attempts to cure the child by a dentist forms a phobic syndrome of dental treatments, manifestation of which are different psychosomatic disorders inherent to Postoperative Behavior.

A consensus statement of the European Association of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatics (EACLPP) and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM).

J Psychosom Res. 2011 May;70(5):486-491

Authors: Leentjens AF, Rundell JR, Wolcott DL, Guthrie E, Kathol R, Diefenbacher A

OBJECTIVE: In 2008, the Board of the European Association of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and Psychosomatics (EACLPP) and the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) Council commissioned the creation of a task force to study consensus-based summaries of core roles, scope of clinical practice, and basic competencies for psychiatrists working in the field of Psychosomatic Medicine (PM) and/or Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (CLP). METHOD: The task force used existing statements of competencies and feedback from EACLPP and APM symposia and workshops to develop a draft document. After review by the EACLPP and APM committees, and the EACLPP Board and APM Council, a period of comment from the field preceded a final draft resubmitted for consideration of the EACLPP Board and APM Council in February 2010. RESULTS: The two organizations completed approval of final publication of the consensus statement on June 11, 2010. This consensus statement is a summary of clinical competencies, scope of clinical effort, and roles considered by the sponsoring organizations to be fundamental to the practice of this subspecialty or special area of expertise, anywhere, of PM or CLP. CONCLUSION: This consensus statement delineates a set of basic competencies and roles of a PM/CLP psychiatrist to serve as an internationally recognized base that may be used by national societies and institutions to formulate their own competencies, scope of practice, and roles or help with guideline formulation.

Incorporation of another person’s limb into body image relieves phantom limb pain: a case study.

Incorporation of another person’s limb into body image relieves phantom limb pain: a case study.

Neurocase. 2010 Dec;16(6):461-5

Authors: Weeks SR, Tsao JW

Phantom limb phenomena are well characterized, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we report a patient who relieves his phantom sensations and pain, experienced as itching and cramping, through scratching or massaging his prosthesis or the leg of another person. This pain relief occurs only when phantom limb sensations are present. We hypothesize that symptom relief results from incorporation of the foreign limb into the patient’s body image, mediated by the sensory mirror neuron system, relieving pain by restoring concordance between sensory systems.
